Attorney Theresa Anne Carey, J.D., came to the Driftless region, the birthplace of her grandfather, in 2005, semi-retiring from the practice of law to raise her seven children. With her youngest son moving on to high school, and seeing a need for affordable legal services in the area, Ms. Carey came out of retirement to establish The People’s Law Clinic & Mediation Center in Viroqua, Wisconsin.
Prior to her admission to the Wisconsin State Bar Association in September of 2018, Ms. Carey was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1987, where she owned and operated a small law firm for many years specializing in Trial Work including Family Law, Child Custody, Domestic Violence, Divorce Mediation, Employment Litigation, Personal Injury, Criminal Law and General Civil Litigation. She got her start in the legal field while still in high school, working as a legal secretary then paralegal, before becoming an attorney.
Since moving to Wisconsin, Ms. Carey has continued work in the legal field providing mediation, legal research and child & family advocacy with special emphasis on working with families in conflict.
As an experienced attorney, and a devoted mother, Ms. Carey is uniquely situated to assist families in crisis with compassion and an in-depth understanding of the diverse challenges faced by those seeking fair and just access to the legal system during difficult times.
